Performing and Connecting

It’s a milestone for me to share full video of an event. The clip below from Dormouse Theatre in Kalamazoo gives a sample of the full video on my YouTube channel that has chapters markers for easy navigation between poems. Below, I’ve shared a brief reflection on lessons learned this year. It was a dream come true presenting my writing to eager audiences. I’ll post 2026 event information soon.

Even before Trample & Sew and News of Need went to press I intended to organize public readings. I envisioned sharing live moments with listeners through the characters, places, and ideas in my writing. I hoped that reading directly to people would share some of the thrill I get as a writer discovering each poem’s images, characters, tensions, and resolutions.

But, like most people, I had never organized a reading tour. I had a packed schedule managing editing and proofreading, designing layouts, making a website, alongside working full time and much else besides. It was a humbling experience that made clear I had to approach the process as an eager and open beginner. If learning was my goal I couldn’t fail.

Over seven readings I learned that listeners valued a helpful amount of background information on creative process but most enjoyed hearing the poems themselves. People consistently enjoyed being suspended inside the unique space of a live reading. I learned that I especially enjoy reciting. Without the book to rely on, I am most able to embody the writing and take listeners on a journey into the emotion of each poem. I explored many aspects of the performances such as speed, emphasis, and tone. I’m still just a beginner and excited to improve.

Before setting out I adapted a practice of gratitude from my daily writing routine. I made a moment before each reading to pray that my efforts could somehow be of service to each listener. Success showed up as new insights, knowledge, and a profound understanding that words matter; personal connectedness through art matters.

Approximately 100 people attended seven events and most purchased books. A few dozen people connected with me on social media and signed up for the mailing list. I am truly grateful for each reader and listener and look forward to touring again in 2026. Stay tuned for details.
